Oral Pathology | Leominster & Gardner MA
Oral pathology is the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that occur in the mouth. Routine dental checkups with your dentist and good oral hygiene behaviors are necessary to keep your smile as healthy as possible. Unfortunately, even with the best health habits, our mouth is particularly susceptible to the development of pathologies. Many oral pathologies are not necessarily painful, and it is important to see a specialist for proper evaluation if you notice a change in your mouth.
At Central Mass Oral Surgery, our oral surgeons are experts in treating oral and maxillofacial pathology. Our staff can schedule a consultation to perform an oral exam and determine if an oral pathology treatment is necessary for your current health. Dr. Colarusso, Dr. Baran and Dr. Kobakov can help maintain your smile using screenings or oral procedures at both offices in Leominster, MA, and Gardner, MA.
Oral Pathology Symptoms
Many oral pathologies do not cause an immediate, noticeable change in the mouth, which is why it is important to be aware of symptoms. If you notice any of the symptoms below, it is important to seek evaluation and treatment.
- Swelling that only increases
- A constant sore throat or extreme difficulty in swallowing
- Red or white patches that appear on the tongue, cheeks or the lining of the mouth
- Sores in the mouth that bleed persistently and do not heal
- Thickening of the lining of the mouth/lumps forming on the neck or inside the mouth
Many of the symptoms above act as indicators or warning signs of a more serious problem or can develop into a more complex condition if not immediately treated. If you can notice any abnormalities, we encourage you to contact our office staff to schedule a consultation as soon as possible.
Diseases in Oral Pathology
There is a wide variety of oral pathologies and the treatment recommended by our surgeons will depend on your particular condition. Some of the most common pathologies diagnosed and treated by oral surgeons include
- Cysts
- Ulcers
- Tumors
- Salivary gland disease
- Oral cancer
- Viral, bacterial, or fungal infections
Our oral surgeons can complete a full evaluation of your condition and recommend treatment during your consultation. Sometimes, a biopsy is recommended to assess the situation thoroughly. A patient’s current oral health, medical history, and preferences will all be taken into consideration when selecting the method for treatment.

Not sure why the redundancy occurred, or where the communication problem was. I went to my regular dentist Dr Coakley on 5/19 for a consultation about a growth on the inside of my right cheek. The dentist took a picture of it and sent it and a referral to CMOS. When I arrived at the scheduled time I went to the procedure room to be informed this was only a consultation. The Dr looked inside my mouth for 10seconds and said I needed to schedule the procedure. I went to check out and was charged $170.00 and was given an estimate of $990 for the procedure. The procedure was done with no problem. I am not happy with 2 consultations. Thank you for any response you can give me.

My 3 yr old developed a thick white rash on the center of her tongue 8 weeks before our appt with the addition of a cluster of blisters that formed on her tongue about a week before our appt. We went through 3 different providers (PCP, Dermatology, and Dentist) before coming to CMOS at the recommendation of our dentist. They filled out the referral form for CMOS and described my daughter's condition, stating that they were referring her for a tongue brush biopsy at CMOS because they don't do biopsies in their office. I called CMOS to make out 7/10 appt the same day I left the dentist, and not only told them what we were being referred for but hand delivered the referral to the office the following week. When we arrived for our appt 5 weeks later the doctor came in, and asked us what we were there for. When I said a tongue brush biopsy he dismissively stated "I don't do those, they're always inconclusive. I do surgical biopsies." After a brief conversation he left the room, my daughter was handed a goody bag, and we were walked out to the reception area with paperwork. Honestly, I'm not sure what the insurance company is being billed for. The referral stated that this appt was for a tongue brush biopsy, so if they don't do them at CMOS I would have expected to receive that information much sooner in advance than as my daughter was sitting in the chair. Furthermore, the doctor didn't do anything but merely talk to us to tell us he doesn't do this procedure, so I'm not sure what he's billing for. To top it off, as we waited for the receptionist to get off the phone one of the medical staff ran out to warn me of a self-inking stamp in my daughter's goody bag that they had given her because they didn't want it "to get all over their couches." I don't understand... I didn't bring ink in for my daughter to play with, it was given to her by staff at CMOS. In the end the receptionist offered my daughter a freeze pop which she appreciated, but I am left with no answers, a medical bill, and am now 5 weeks behind trying to determine what is causing the discomfort on my daughter's tongue. All in all was not a great experience. Would I go back if I needed to for something? Sure, if I had to. But it wasn't a welcoming or friendly experience as I would have hoped.

I was very nervous to come into the office, but CMOS calmed my nerves. Stephanie was able to hold a hand and give some great advice. Dr. Kobakov is very good at what he does and made the process effortless. A nice stop in the recovery room with Kelly left me with no questions and Melissa made for a stress free checkout with some laughs. An experience I have never had while visiting a doctor’s office! Thank you CMOS for helping me!!
