Apicoectomy | Leominster & Gardner MA

When an infection reaches the root of a tooth, the infection can spread to other parts of the mouth, causing further oral complications. Drs. Colarusso, Baran and Kobakov use an apicoectomy treatment to prevent the extraction of your original teeth and preserve your smile. An apicoectomy procedure preserves a tooth by eliminating the infection in the blood vessels and segments that branch out from a tooth’s roots. At Central Mass Oral Surgery, our oral surgeons can perform an apicoectomy after an oral exam and consultation. Our practice has two offices for your convenience in Leominster, MA, and Gardner, MA. Our office staff is more than happy to assist you with scheduling a consultation at your earliest convenience.

Apicoectomy Procedure

A root canal is often used to repair and save a tooth that has become infected, by cleaning the inside of the tooth to prevent an abscess from forming. If a root canal surgery fails to erase all signs of infection, our oral surgeons can perform an apicoectomy to save your tooth.

The apex of a tooth root has many channels that branch off from the root, hiding infected tissue deep in the gums. Drs. Colarusso, Baran and Kobakov will enter the tooth root through the gums to access the infected area. Once one of our oral surgeons has successfully reached the infected end (apex) of the tooth root, your surgeon will remove the apex and clean the infected tissue in and around the tooth.

When the apex is clear of infection, your oral surgeon will insert a small filling where the apex used to be to seal the end of the tooth. After a brief healing period, patients can quickly resume their daily habits such as eating, drinking, and speaking comfortably. The filling prevents further infections or oral complications from recurring in the tooth root.
